Water is the source of life, but it is sometimes a nemesis to a homeowner with plumbing problems. There is not much else short of catastrophe that is going to cause as much damage to a home as plumbing issues. As a homeowner, you can take some preventive steps to make sure you are not affected by serious plumbing issues.
Septic Tank
Your septic tank should be pumped out at least once every five years if you want it to stay in optimum working order. Septic systems can back up when the septic tank builds up sediment. This can even result in the septic system failing altogether. Although having a septic tank pumped costs money, cleaning up sewage backup in your home will ultimately cost much more.
Don’t pay the entire plumbing bill upfront; wait until the plumber finishes the plumbing job. You may have to pay a portion of the cost before the plumber works on the job, but you should never have to pay in full until after everything has been correctly finished. You should make sure the plumber did a good job before you pay in full.
If your toilet’s water level is low, the toilet is clogged up, and using a plunger isn’t resolving the issue, hold a bucket filled with warm water at about your waistline, and pour it into your toilet. Repeat this procedure if necessary as the water returns back to a lower level.
Do not attempt fixing your garbage disposal with bare hands. Your garbage disposal is a dangerous device, even when turned off. Locate your garbage disposal manual, or do an Internet search for troubleshooting advice and a diagram that illustrates your model.
Check carefully around the base of your toilet for any damage caused by leaks. Sit in a reversed position, putting one foot on each side of the toilet and shift your weight from side to side to check if the floor feels slightly unstable. You can save money if you notice the problem as soon as possible.
Make a schedule for plumbing work, so it occurs all at approximately the same time. Do not call a plumber for minor issues. You can save money by waiting to have everything fixed at the same time. Another reason it lowers costs is that plumbers bill per hour worked, and due to partial hour effects, doing all the work at once results in lower billable hours.
Baking Soda
Here is a good tip for a safe, inexpensive way to keep the drain in your bathtub trouble-free. Take one cup of baking soda and pour it into the drain. Then do the same with a cup of vinegar. Do this procedure once a month. Cover the drain with a plug or rag as you wait for the chemical reaction between the vinegar and baking soda to happen in your pipes. After about 10 minutes you can flush the pipes out with boiling water. This procedure should clear the pipes of soap scum and accumulated hair.
